November through January bring a slower pace to the mountains.  Leaves are still around at lower elevatioins through mid-November.  Of course, the mountains are gorgeous without leaves too...mountain views are still spectacular!  Holiday shopping events are coming up in November and December, check the calendar for dates and times to pick up one of a kind gifts for friends and family.

Outdoor recreation available year round plus soak up the spectacular scenery of Lake James, the Blue Ridge Parkway or the DiamondbackNC.  Lake James is always "open"  for boating, fishing or as a great place to sit by the lake and enjoy the grill and bar at Bear Creek Marina.  The DiamondbackNC takes you around 190 steep, winding curves on a 12 mile route ascending the Blue Ridge Mountains past Marion, through Cox's Creek and Turkey Cove, past Wild Acres Retreat to the 100 year old community of Little Switzerland.  The top portion of the route parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway, for a short distance, as you pass the Switzerland Inn (open April through first of November), also turning 100 in 2010.  Other places to stop include Big Lynn Lodge (March - October), Skyline Village Inn and Cavern Tavern (open year round) and the Mountain View Restaurant (open year round) where the route joins Highway 226, just outside the town of Spruce Pine.  Pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway and travel to the Orchard at Altapass and on to Linville Falls. You'll find our Parkway communities of Little Switzerland, Altapass or Linville Falls between Mileposts 316 and 335 with access from Marion or Old Fort via Highway 70 to Highway 80/Lake Tahoma Road or Highway 221/226 North to Linville Falls or Highway 226-A to Little Switzerland. 

Point Lookout Trail, a paved route for hikers or bicyclists, and Catawba Falls are just outside Old Fort.  Take the camera and experience the quiet and calm of these beautiful trails.
